Office desks, If you’re anything like me these are likely the pillar stone of your home office, the thing you show off whenever you get visitors, and for some reason the thing I get the most envious of when I see my friends with a really nice one. One of the things that surprised me though is just how much they need to weigh.
According to this study the average wooden desk weighs 27 kg ( 59.5 pounds). The average computer desk weighs 25kg (55.5 pounds). The average childrens desk should weigh 16kg (35.2 pounds).
So why is there a difference in between what these desks weigh? Why is it important to have a desk weigh a certain amount? And are there any other things that are important to know when looking at desk weight? Keep reading to find out more…

How Much Do Desks Weigh?
Office desks are an incredibly broad term to use. I mean it’s not one of the things you might have considered but if you really look at your office desk you’ll find that it might be different from others out there.
Some have extra storage space and have individual cabinets. Others are fully standing desks with electrical features. In my experience you can typically break down desks into the following categories:
- Wooden desks
- Standing desks
- Computer desks
- Desks with drawers and compartments
- Children’s desks
Let’s look at each of these in detail.

Wooden Desks
Probably the most common type of desk that offices have. These can either have metal legs or wooden but it’s mostly likely that if you look over your desk there will be some variant on this.
The average weight of a wooden desk is: 47.64 pounds (21.6kg)

Computer Desks
So computer desks are typically solely used for holding computers ( surprise surprise) . Now computer desks also have a massive level of variation with some having desks, some also doubling up as wood desks
The average weight for a computer desk is: 42.92 pounds (19.46kg)

Metal Desks
Metal desks usually(but not always) are the most expensive desks mainly because of the materials used. Anyone who has ever tried to heave one of these around knows how difficult and cumbersome they can be … as well as how bad the delivery cost on them will be.
The average weight of metals desks is: 50.16 pounds (22.75kg)

Children’s Desks
So a lot of you might be looking to buy office desks for your kids. If this is the case you can actually buy specific desks for children which are built just for them ( no more cushions on top of chairs anymore!)
The average weight of a children’s desk is: 24.82 pounds (11.25kg)

Standing Desks
So standing desks are becoming more and more popular with more and more people looking for a way to stay healthy as they work. With recent studies really showing the benefits of getting up and moving around when you work, the market really is booming for these.
On average standing desks weigh: 42.75 pounds (19.39kg)

Why does desk weight matter?
So you might not have even considered this before but the weight of your brand spanking new office desk matters for a couple of key reasons.
- The heavier your desk the more you will need to pay for transport/delivery/moving. Bare in mind that not all companies offer free shipping
- Moving heavy desks around your home/work office can cause significant damage to things like carpet, draws and other furniture, especially if you have something like a huge heavy metal desk.
- Lifting these desks up things like the stairs can also be very time consuming and even cause injury to your back. It’s advisable then, that you don’t lift weight more than you can handle, fantastic removals have a great post about this so check it out
Other weights you should know
It’s worth noting that everything above just talks about the desk in one unit but there are other weights you might need to consider. For example, If you are buying the frame individually or the table tops individually.
A good rule of thumb is:
- Frame – 61lbs
- Desktop (48X30”) – 48lbs
- Desktop (60X30”) – 57lbs
- Desktop (72X30”) – 69lbs
- Desktop (80X30”) – 77lbs
How much will it cost to move heavy desks?
Typically, negotiating with moving companies to transport your desk can be quite stressful. This is usually more so for smaller independent moving companies that don’t have a fixed rate per hour.
Larger Moving companies typically charge on an hourly basis. Ranging from $145 all the way up to $250 depending on the state you live in.
Now with the advent of the internet, there are super moving companies that will allow you to transport goods between states for a fixed price (usually $499) like gentle moving.
If you want to go down the more traditional route, moving your desk from one state to another, the larger movers will tend to charge you:
- Fedex $50
- UPS $55
Please note that these prices can obviously vary depending on distance, weight and type of desk.
How much weight can office desks hold?
So let’s paint a picture, you’ve browsed around for a few months, finally spend your hard earned money on what you think is the perfect desk and as soon as you put something with a bit of heft on it BOOM the desks caves in.
Okay so that might not sound super realistic but making sure your desk can hold the right amount of weight you need is a consideration a lot of people don’t take into account.
So how much weight can an office desk hold? Without knowing the exact size and shape of your office desk there is no hard and fast rule to this. On top of this different manufacturers might have different specifications.
The good news is I’ve put together a quick list of different desks with their weight capacities below:

Is there a standard weight for desks?
As you can see above, sadly not, but we can make some assumptions that the more an office desk weighs the more weight it can hold.
Of the 5 desks we highlighted earlier the average weight of the desks were 45 pounds or about 20kg and the average weight they could hold was 300 pounds or 136kg.
This means that office desks can typically hold upto 6 times their existing weight.
Is there a standard height for office desks?
As you can see from all of the desks highlighted throughout this blog post. There are massive variations.Taking away the kids desks ( because that would really skew the numbers) the average height of all the desks highlighted here is 34.97 inches.
Now from this we can put a range that office desks typically fall in between 25 inches and 50 inches height.
